There are many important themes in the Fourth Gospel (FG), but only one expresses the gospel's ultimate purpose: eternal life. One would expect that such an important theme would be examined exhaustively through the best available methodologies. Surprisingly, it has not. The New Testament (NT) use of the Old Testament (OT) has emerged as one of the most significant hermeneutical methods of modern scholarship, yet no study exists that comprehensively examines John's eternal life theme against the backdrop of the OT. The present dissertation seeks to meet this need. Upon reading the FG intertextually with its OT source material, it becomes evident that John frames the gospel of life in connection with (and fulfillment of) Deuteronomy. Properly observing this frame is key to understanding the background and meaning of the FG's eternal life theme.
