The thesis of this dissertation is that discipleship in John 6:25-59 needs to be read with the fulfillment of the New Covenant perspective because this connection provides the most likely interpretation for the passage. This reading helps in understanding more clearly the subject of discipleship in John's Gospel and the New Covenant aspects revealed in John 6:25-59.This dissertation has six chapters. Chapter one introduces the subject of discipleship by looking at its background in the Greek materials during both the Classical and Hellenistic periods, the Old Testament and materials from Second Temple Judaism. Chapter two discusses the method of the study by looking at the understanding of discipleship in the Gospel of John by exegeting the most significant passages that help in understanding the concept. Chapter three looks at Moses and manna that he provided in the wilderness as a background to understanding John 6:25-59 where both are mentioned. This is done by comparing the ministry of Moses and Jesus. Chapter four exegetes John 6:25-59 and reveals that Jesus is the true bread of life whose appropriation leads to eternal life. The chapter further discusses the New Covenant aspects mentioned by the evangelist that seem proleptically fulfilled through his "already" view of salvation. Chapter five addresses the New Covenant promises found in Jeremiah 31:33-34, Isaiah 54:13, Ezekiel 36:26-27, Second Temple Judaism and the Patristic Fathers. This chapter is concluded by looking at how John 6:25-59 reflects on Jeremiah 31:33-34 and Isaiah 54:13. Then, chapter six concludes by summarizing all the ideas discussed in the entire dissertation.
