Child sexual abuse is a national issue affecting many families worldwide. There are many different forms of child sexual abuse. However, this dissertation focused on household members, as there is a different type of trauma when it involves someone in the same household. Child sexual abuse affects all types of families. This study focused on families in which the mother is the primary caregiver. Although there is a surplus of information related to indicators of child sexual abuse and the impact on the child and the family, there is a gap in research regarding analyzing and assessing a caregiver's support and how that support affects a child's recovery. The qualitative action research (AR) aimed to assess caregivers' protective capacity to decrease the likelihood of recantation or being revictimized. Two research questions guided the study: 1) How do social workers describe mothers who lack insight into their child's abuse or, on the other hand, demonstrate protective factors following disclosure of sexual abuse? 2) Upon identifying parents who do not appear protective, are there situational factors that contribute to the lack of protective intuition and insight following a child's disclosure of sexual abuse? This study impacts change by using the caregivers' identified protective and non-protective characteristics to implement an intervention within families to decrease the rate of removals and recantation. The research instruments included a field journal, focus group, and individual interviews. There was a total of 10 social workers in the study. The research was based on resiliency theory. The findings of this study resulted in social workers identifying actions demonstrated by the mother, which depict a protective caregiver, as well as actions that indicate a mother who does not possess the protective capacity. This information was also explained using the attachment theory and how each attachment style affects a mother's protective capacity. Data analysis was conducted using Braun and Clarke's (2017) thematic approach. The primary themes included the mothers' actions following disclosure, betrayal, domestic violence, and financial resources. After the study, a PowerPoint was provided to stakeholders to disseminate the results of the AR. Stakeholders were informed of the data obtained from interviewing the social workers. For the action piece of the study, subsequent interventions were discussed with stakeholders to address barriers related to the protective capacity of mothers.
