The U.S. Foreign Service comprises thousands of officers stationed worldwide who are charged with representing the U.S. government abroad through the formulation and implementation of foreign policy. This responsibility requires effective leadership skills, particularly in a complex era of globalization. To date, little research has been conducted into the self-reported leadership attributes of Foreign Service Officers' (FSO) career satisfaction in an increasingly globalized work environment. Two complementary models for leadership, which empirical research has demonstrated to be effective in a range of contemporary contexts, are global leadership and servant leadership. Both leadership styles appear particularly necessary in the context of globalization. This study utilized the post positivist approach to investigate the relationship between U.S. Foreign Service Officers' career satisfaction (their perceived career success) and their self-identification with either of these two leadership styles. Global leadership was operationalized using Ang et al.'s (2007) Cultural Intelligence Scale (CQS), servant leadership used Dennis and Bocarnea's (2007) Servant Leadership Assessment Instrument (SLAI), and career satisfaction was operationalized using Greenhaus, Parasuraman, and Wormley's (1990) Career Satisfaction Scale (CSS). The participants for the survey consisted of 279 both active and retired Foreign Service Officers as a representative sample at all grade levels in the Foreign Service to complete the CQS, CSS, and SLAI inventories. Results did not support the hypothesis that cultural intelligence affects career satisfaction using regression models including servant leadership and demographic variables. However, results found partial support with two dimensions of servant leadership-trust and service-to be positively related to career satisfaction. The study concludes with discussion that although results indicated that cultural intelligence did not increase the career satisfaction, focusing on the trust and service dimensions of servant leadership may increase the career satisfaction of U.S. Foreign Service Officers.
