African American women (AAW) have the highest burden of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). There is a substantial lack of qualitative information to understand the perceptions of AAW experience with GDM and their risk to develop T2DM later in life. In this qualitative study, hermeneutic phenomenology approach (Max van Manen's six research activities) was applied to explore subjective aspects of lived experiences of AAW who had GDM to better understand their perceptions of risk to T2DM. Two overarching research questions were examined. The first research question focused on the lived experiences among AAW after experiencing GDM within the last seven years. The second research question focused on the perceptions of risk among AAW developing T2DM in the future after experiencing GDM. A demographic survey was used to collect information about the eligibility of the AAW to ensure that the inclusion criteria for participation was adequately met. One virtual open-ended focus group and three one-on-one interviews were used to collect information for research questions 1 and 2. NVivo12 software was used to thematize the data. Seven AAW were recruited from the Indiana Black Breastfeeding Coalition. Nine major themes emerged to address the research questions. In conclusion, AAW experiences should be considered while designing strategies to promote healthier lifestyles. These findings identified negative outcomes that persist with AAW after GDM experiences. Based on the findings, there is a need to improve early screening for GDM especially among AAW at risk of developing T2DM to improve prevention and quality of care. There is a need to improve mental health outcomes and efforts with culturally tailored resources. The findings inform maternal healthcare services and positive birth outcomes to ensure AAW receive quality care.
