The Middle Cambrian period, marked by the Cambrian radiation, witnessed a surge in animal diversity, with trilobites being significant contributors to this phenomenon. Employing geometric morphometrics techniques, I investigated the cranidial shape variation in Middle Cambrian trilobite species from Utah, aiming to elucidate how the shape and disparity varies across different species and localities, shortly after the Cambrian Radiation interval in an important bilateral clade. The species studied included Asaphiscus wheleeri Meek, 1873, Bathyuriscus fimbriatus Robison, 1964, Modocia brevispina Robison, 1964, and Modocia laevinucha Robison, 1964. My analyses revealed distinct patterns of morphological variation within and among species, shedding light on their evolutionary dynamics. In A. wheeleri, subtle but statistically discernible morphometric clusters were identified, possibly indicative of intraspecific variation. In addition, geographic variation was observed in B. fimbriatus. There is a difference in the disparity of the two species of Modocia considered, but no statistically significant difference in shape variation was found between them. Furthermore, preservation style, tested in two species of Modocia, did not significantly affect morphometric variability, emphasizing the robustness of geometric morphometrics in trilobite studies. These findings contribute to our understanding of trilobite evolution and underscore the importance of quantifying morphological variation for elucidating evolutionary patterns during critical intervals such as the Cambrian.
