Stigma is a social construct used to represent a phenomenon that has inhibited the opportunities for marginalized people to have full participation in their communities (Link & Phelan, 2001; Townley & Kloos, 2011; Turner et al., 2017). Particularly for individuals with serious mental illnesses (SMIs), stigma is a challenge when trying to integrate into their communities. Community integration is the extent to which an individual lives, participates, and socializes in their community (Wong & Solomon, 2002). Community integration has been defined in the literature in three dimensions; physical, psychological, and social integration (Aubry & Myner, 1996; Wong & Solomon, 2002). Studies have found that stigma has negative consequences for these community integration dimensions and can lead to social isolation and diminished social networks (Albert et al., 1998; Aubry & Myner, 1996; Bromley et al., 2013; Mejia-Lancheros, 2021; Pahwa et al., 2019; Perkins et al., 2009; Perry, 2011). This dissertation aims to unpack the why, what, how, and who of stigma in the context of communities. Study 1 will use quantitative egocentric social network and survey data to explore the influence of various individual and community integration factors on experience of internalized stigma. Study 2 will use semi-structured interviews to get an in-depth understanding of how the experience of community is influenced by stigma. Study 3 will use qualitative egocentric social network data and multiple case study analysis to understand perceived stigma in social relationships. Discussion will be included about how these studies will lend insight to developing more meaningful interventions and policies addressing stigma to assist those with SMIs to participate in their communities. Discussion and limitations are addressed throughout these papers, as well as at the end in the overall dissertation section.
