This dissertation explores the relationship between women and public relations in three ways. First, through an argumentation that deeply examines the historical relationship between women in Western society, the field of public relations, and organizational participation. In doing so the structural barriers between women and public relations are discussed as well as new vocabulary for the field is proposed. The second study utilizes quantitative survey to understand how employees feel about their female leaders via leadership communication. Through measuring leadership communication efficacy, role congruency, and executive gender, the survey measures how these variables impact employee perceptions of their leaders' likability and credibility overall. The third study, through in-depth interviews of female leaders, examines the lived experiences that women have with their employing organizations and how they understand their communication through an internal public relations lens. In doing so, the complex relationship that women have with their employers as well as their role as underrepresented but highly visible leaders is revealed and more understood. The final chapter brings together the overarching contribution of the three studies.
