This study examined the relationships among career adaptability, dysfunctional career thoughts, and athletic identity. These relationships are fundamental for developing a complementary strategy of understanding the symptomology that explains rigid, automatic cognitive processing while also cultivating positive, adaptive attributes. A sample of 92 college aged student athletes from a large southeastern research university were recruited to complete an online survey which included the Career Adapt-Abilities Scale - Dual Career Form (CAAS-DC; Ryba, Zhang, Huang, & Aunola, 2017), Career Thoughts Inventory (CTI; Sampson, Peterson, Lenz, Reardon, & Saunders, 1996a), and Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS; Brewer, Van Raalte, & Linder, 1993). Pearson correlations determined significant negative associations existed between career adaptability and dysfunctional career thoughts. Additionally, hierarchical multiple regression analyses revealed that the AIMS's subscales of exclusivity and self-identity significantly explained the variation in the CTI total score. Also, it was found that the CAAS-DC's subscales of dual career concern, concern, and confidence significantly predicted the AIMS total score. A discussion of the results along with future directions for theory, research, practice, and policy are provided.
