The purpose of this dissertation was to explore predictors of information and communication technology (ICT) and what ICT predicted within the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS). This was accomplished through three individual studies which examined: (1) the factor structure of ICT variables provided by the NHATS dataset, (2) a cross-sectional model exploring individual characteristic variables explaining ICT use, and ICT use exploring three outcomes (e.g., physical health, emotional well-being, and social participation), and (3) longitudinal associations between select individual characteristics to ICT use and how ICT relates to emotional well-being. Examining literature for the respective studies showed a deficit of research of the ICT factor structure within the NHATS data. Furthermore, the aim of this study was to assess ICT predictors, as well as longitudinal changes of ICT.Data utilized for the three studies in this dissertation included waves two (N = 7,075), three (N = 5,799), and four (N = 4,734) of NHATS. The present studies utilized (1) individual characteristic variables (e.g., gender, location, marital status, age, education, race/ethnicity, personality traits, cognitive function, and occupation); (2) information and communication technology (i.e., summing several items); (3) physical health, emotional health, and social integration. Study one utilized factor analysis (i.e., exploratory, and confirmatory) on wave two (i.e., baseline) and replicated across later waves. This was followed by longitudinal measurement invariance. Study two was cross-sectional in nature and utilized structural equation modeling techniques to explore a base, a constrained, and mediation model(s). Lastly, study three explored a random intercept cross-lagged panel model to explore the between- and within-person relationships on technology use and emotional health.The aim of the first study was to explore how ICT variables relate to an ICT use construct through exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Results from the first study indicated adequate and acceptable loadings (i.e., > .40) and model fit (i.e., RMSEA 0.95, and SRMR < .08) across all waves of data for a single factor. Measurement invariance results indicated that the latent ICT construct measured consistently across time.The aim of the second study was to explore the cross-sectional relationships predicting ICT use, and how ICT relates to physical well-being, emotional well-being, and social integrations. Results indicated older and non-metropolitan individuals utilized ICT at a lower rate; and participants with higher education used more technology. However, technology use did not predict well-being variables after controlling for individual characteristic variables. Lastly, there was a significant indirect effect of education to physical health through technology use.The aim of the third study was to explore the random intercept cross-lagged effects and how ICT use over time relates to emotional well-being. The results indicated significant stability and cross-lagged relationships for ICT and emotional well-being. Inertia/stability effects remained significant across waves for both variables, and chi-square model difference testing indicated those paths were time-invariant. Examining cross-lagged relationships yielded significant findings for all lags. Stated differently, better emotional health predicted increases in technology use at the next wave, and vice versa. Generally, technology use was the stronger relationship between waves two and three, whereas the strength of the relationship became smaller and non-significant in waves three and four.This dissertation helps explore a niche population in research literature, and the technology sector. This can be particularly important for stakeholders looking to examine, refine, and build better technology experiences and opportunities for older adults. Practical examples from studies two and three highlight a few individual characteristics that bring older adults to use technology; furthermore, older adults can benefit emotionally from using technology. Though more theoretical, study one provides the research world with one way of exploring how technology use might be constructed into a single factor. Though much work still needs to be done exploring older adult technology access, usage, and adoption, these studies help build upon the foundational work of what drives older adults to use technology.
