Chapter 1: Introdution -- Chapter 2: Consciousness and Society -- Chapter 3: From a world of relations toa world of things -- Chapter 4: Space oddities and the primitive entities of socio-material systems: Some thoughts for the international ssytem -- Chapter 5: what's the hubbub, bub? : On the natural an social sciences and why IR is more completx than quantum.
"If scholars of international relations are to understand international systems, Derick Becker insists, they must explain how these systems have emerged. And emergence is ultimately a matter of how the consciousness of individuals functions. This is a bold claim to be sure, but it is convincingly defended in this book. The argument is learned, but the prose is lighthearted. Becker does not write to show off, but in order to persuade. There is no such thing as international systems isolated and apart from the operations of human minds." - Erik Ringmar , Professor Emeritus and Fellow at the Centro de Investigação em Ciência Política at the University of Minho, Braga, Portugal. This book engages contemporary research in the neurobiology of consciousness, specifically how Integrated Information Theory (IIT) understands and models consciousness as an emergent phenomenon. In a thorough yet accessible discussion of IIT, the book explores the implications of IIT for social science and International Relations theory, particularly concerning the emergent nature of social and political systems. It is intended to be accessible to non-specialists and professional social scientists alike. The idea is to put forward a bold set of ideas that engage longstanding and contemporary debates in a format that is useful to scholars while remaining clear and cogent enough for the novice. The author's intention is to balance the scholarly in an accessible way primarily by making a few focused scholarly points elaborated with minimal esoteric language and relying on endnotes. Derick Becker is Assistant Professor in the School of Politics, History and International Relations at the University of Nottingham in Malaysia.
