The thesis project aims to investigate renewable energy transition under two fundamentally different economies in normative and socio-political contexts by adapting comparative case studies on offshore wind energy development in Australia and Taiwan. Globally, countries have used renewable energy deployment as means to combat climate change. Such technological development and innovation to transforming natural resources into biomass and renewable energy acts as one of the crucial mechanisms to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, including Australia and Taiwan. However, renewable energy development poses great challenges when applied in the domestic context and sustainable energy transition is not guaranteed.Qualitative research method is used for this study to analyse empirical data from interviews with government agencies, banks, offshore wind energy developers and non-profit organisations and secondary data that includes government and industry publications. The research analysis finds apparent politicisation surrounding the topic of energy as debates on energy transition and policies deepen the divide of government and public opinion. While the corporatist model of strong relations between the government and industries exists in Taiwan, comparatively, the case study spells out government's careful and strategic support under Australia's free-market government and industry relationship. Furthermore, energy security, independence and the lack of land urged renewable energy development in Taiwan whereas Australia struggles to progress from coal and the technical challenges in its outdated grid systems. The study highlights the deep-rooted energy issues in Australia and Taiwan and discovers similar problems in the deployment albeit very different socio-economic contexts at first. However, the contrasting result of offshore wind energy deployment thus far concludes the effectiveness of offshore wind energy deployment is most impactful with reform of renewable energy commitment, supporting government policy framework, continuous revisions of rules and regulations through policy considerations and proactive ongoing dialogues between key players.
