The use of artificial intelligence (AI) to create mental health treatment applications brings into question the intersection between technology and psychology, a relationship this thesis investigates as symbolized by the Great Mother archetype with its nurturing, devouring, and transformative aspects. Using a hermeneutic methodology, this thesis explores the manifestation of the mother archetype in AI, examining how AI influences users' perceptions and interactions and impacts human psychological development and social connection. Incorporating literature from psychology, neuroscience, and technology, the research supports the theory that human-AI relationships are attachment driven, and that unconscious dependence upon this technology elicits a regressive tendency. This thesis explores this regressive tendency in relation to technological addiction and traumatic disrelation. An exploration of the tension between the desires for intimacy and independence in a technologically advanced society offers a conceptual framework for clinical interventions that are reflective of the human pursuit for nurturance and acceptance.
