In the era of AI-based algorithms, social media personalization technology developed by large corporations satisfies individual preferences and subjectivity. However, it paradoxically encourages narcissistic tendencies within users, which enables companies to centralize control. Social media platforms can create echo chambers that amplify the views and beliefs of particular groups, leading to collective narcissism with a distorted sense of reality. While enhancing individual user experiences, this phenomenon feeds into the development of multiple online personas that align with one's preferences, reinforcing a narcissistic projection of the self and fostering a distorted sense of self-importance, a limited world perspective, and inhibiting genuine introspection. Social media's inevitable incorporation of AI-based algorithms is limiting our individual autonomy by blurring the lines between opinions that are our own and those that are heavily influenced by what we are exposed to via social media. This unfortunate loss of autonomy will hinder the fundamental diversity of thought required for creativity and innovation. Through qualitative and visual research, case studies, and the presentation of artworks by the author, this paper provides a polemical and critical voice to describe a new dystopian society. This new society suffers from the dangers of social uniformity, breeds random hatred, lacks diversity, and weakens human relationships. In the end, reliance on AI personalization will bring on the aforementioned dystopian society hypnotized by collective narcissism where uniformity reigns, and diversity is suppressed. Society comes under the influence of large technology companies, nuanced meanings are reproduced, and we fall into a passive cycle of existence. Although it is unclear if this dystopian future can be avoided, a deeper understanding of AI-based algorithms and their societal impacts is a first step.
