This study examines macrofloral assemblages from 63 archaeological sites in central Sweden to test a new methodology in detecting medicinal plant use in the paleoethnobotanical record, to draw conclusions about the change and continuity of the medicinal plant use in the Svea region (See Figure A) between 600-1200 AD (See Figure B) and to further understand healers and their place in Svear society. The conclusions show the results of five cast studies from the macrofloral assemblages of the following sites: Vendel, Källstalöt, Askeby Monastery, Kvarteret Åkroken (Medieval Nyköping) and Sigtuna. Using performance theory, I show that the presence and authority of healers put them in positions of higher status and privilege. Healing performance used the same pharmacopeia and likely healing performances through the pagan era. When Christian monasteries and missions enter the region, healers, likely primarily women, adopted some medicinal plants from the continent and reframed their performances incorporation the "deep structures" of the church.
