Changing land use and disturbance regimes have reduced the historical extent of the sagebrush steppe ecosystem by 45%, prompting widespread interest in restoration and conservation. However, sagebrush steppe restoration is unpredictable, making it challenging to identify effective management strategies across its range. Grand Teton National Park (GRTE) is restoring 4,500 acres of degraded smooth brome (Bromus inermis) hayfields to native sagebrush steppe and has observed poor shrub establishment and native grass dominance in some areas. We aim to experimentally identify management techniques that most optimally restore conditions found in intact sagebrush habitat. We established a 2x2 factorial field experiment testing the effects of seed mix design and planting method on shrub establishment and species composition. The seed mix design included two mixes differing in grass and forb proportions. The planting method included combinations of tilling and sowing methods: no-till plots were drill-seeded and till plots were broadcast-seeded. Our results indicate that forbs were most abundant in the forb-heavy seed mix plots, grasses were most abundant in grass-heavy seed mix plots, and shrubs were most abundant in no-till grass-heavy seed mix plots. Furthermore, Artemisia tridentata establishment was highest in no-till plots with a drill-seeded grass-heavy seed mix, while Purshia tridentata establishment was highest in till plots with a broadcast-seeded grass-heavy seed mix. Species richness and invasion risk were indistinguishable across treatments. These results identify important management trade-offs and suggest that different restoration methods can increase the establishment of different shrub species and influence overall species composition.
