Flutter is one of the most hazardous phenomena that occurs when flexible structures are exposed to a combination of inertial and aerodynamic forces. In the context of aviation and aerospace engineering, flutter occurs from insufficient structural dampening that eventually causes a surge in the energy contributed to the structure as wind speed increases. This causes structural vibration to rise in amplitude, which ultimately results in structural failure. The resulting oscillations are self-exciting and continue until the structure undergoes failure. Therefore, flutter analysis can be utilized to alleviate this issue at an early stage of design development.AxSTREAM is used to develop a single-stage axial compressor with its own unique blade profile to match the user defined constraints. This research aims to understand the flutter behavior of the NACA 0024 symmetrical airfoil through both experimental and mathematical analysis, as a preliminary step toward analyzing complex blade geometries of the axial compressor. The main goal of this work is to perform an initial flutter analysis on this standard NACA 0024 airfoil experimentally using a subsonic wind tunnel and MATLAB code and use the obtain data for a more sophisticated analysis of the compressor blades.
