Unfortunately, as baby boomers reach middle age, cardiovascular disease will kill or debilitate even greater numbers of individuals world-wide. Fortunately, a variety of non-invasive imaging techniques can now be used to safely, reliably and cost-effectively detect cardiovascular disease in the pre-clinical state. These newer diagnostic approaches identify surrogate markers of atherosclerosis, which indicate cardiovascular disease and increased cardiovascular risk before the occurrence of occult disease and the concomitant adverse events (heart attack or stroke)."
