Thesis (M.S.)--Wayne State University, 2011.
A hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) combines a conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) propulsion system with an electric propulsion system. In a series HEV, an electric motor drives the vehicle, battery system is used as energy storage system, and the engine runs its optimum operating region to charge the battery. In this way a series HEV is capable of increasing the fuel economy of the vehicle. Fuel economy is attracting increasing attention from researchers because of limited supply and rising demand of fossil fuels, its high cost, and above all, the environmental concerns. Many researchers work on improving HEVs in order to get higher fuel efficiencies. In this thesis, we begin with modeling a conventional vehicle in GT-Drive. We determine and verify its fuel economy and then converted the model into a series hybrid electric vehicle. We also perform modeling and simulation of different configurations of the series HEV and compare their fuel consumption rate with that of the conventional vehicle.
