The first essay studies the allocative role of prime brokers in the market for hedge funds. I show that prime brokers help hedge funds attract capital, but that hedge funds that receive capital through this channel tend to subsequently underperform. The second essay investigates the impact of rehypothecation (the reuse of collateral) on collateralized lending. In a theoretical setting, I demonstrate that rehypothecation decreases the risk faced by ultimate lenders, and thus increases the pledgeability of risky collateral. The third essay studies the decision of an information monopolist to sell either information or an information production technology (knowledge) in a network setting. I show that selling knowledge is necessary for the monopolist to extract surplus from distant buyers. However, on certain network structures, selling knowledge will create competitors and destory the monopolist's ability to extract surplus.
