Cancer and aging are associated with functional limitations, however, the reasons for these limitations are unknown. The purpose of this study was to examine potential reasons of functional limitations among older long-term colorectal cancer survivors using a newly developed assessment tool, the Physical Function Perception Scale (PFPS). Nine hundred thirty-eight long-term colorectal cancer survivors (mean age = 81.55; sd = 5.79 yrs) from the Wisconsin Cancer Registry participated in this study. Participants completed the PFPS, Medical Outcomes Study Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), Brief Pain Inventory, Community Health Activities Model Program for Seniors Questionnaire (CHAMPS), and a Medical History & Health Habits Questionnaire. A subsample from Dane County came into the lab for performance-based function testing. Descriptive data analyses were used to identify the reasons older colorectal cancer survivors gave for their functional limitations. ANCOVA was used to compare functional limitations between men and women, and correlational analyses and ANOVA were used to conduct a preliminary examination of the validity of the PFPS. The results indicated that 93% of the sample reported at least one functional limitation, with the average being 10 limitations. A majority of the sample (72%) reported one reason for their limitations with balance being the most commonly reported reason (35%), followed by fatigue (27%), health (27%), pain (26%), and other (23%). Overall, there were no significant (p > 0.05) gender differences in the number of limitations, the degree of limitation, or the reasons for limitations for the PFPS total score, for lower body function, or for mobility. However, for upper body function, women reported significantly (p < 0.05) more functional limitations and a greater degree of limitation than the men. The PFPS was found to correlate significantly (p < 0.05) with the SF-36 physical function subscale and performance-based function testing. In addition, older adults who reported a specific reason (i.e., balance, pain, fatigue, or health) scored significantly (p < 0.05) higher on relevant criterion measures. It is concluded that results from this study offer preliminary support for the validity of the PFPS, and that additional research is required to further test the psychometric properties of the PFPS.
