The purpose of this research was to measure and correlate the area-average heat transfer coefficients for free, circular upward-impinging oil jets onto a flat plate and also onto two automotive pistons having different undercrown shapes and different diameters. This research included flow observations of the impinging oil jets onto a glass plate in order to characterize the flow and the impingement areas. The observations identified three flow regimes: a high Prandtl number, low Reynolds number regime characterized by a conical oil film dripping downward from the surface; a low Prandtl number, low Reynolds number regime in which the conical films breaks into separated streams; and a low Prandtl, high Reynolds number regime in which an air-entrained oil jet contacts the surface and forms an irregular two-phase contact area. An image processing technique was used to measure the oil jet impingement areas and to determine the effective impingement diameters, which were successfully correlated to a function of the Reynolds, Prandtl and Bond numbers.

520 $a From the flat plate heat transfer studies, two empirical area-average Nusselt number correlations were developed; one based on the whole flat plate underside surface area with the Nusselt number based on the nozzle diameter, and the other based on the oil jet impingement area with the Nusselt number based on the oil jet effective impingement diameter. The correlations can predict 98% and 97% of the experimental measurements within 30% error, respectively.
520 $a For the piston heat transfer studies, two empirical area-average Nusselt number correlations were developed. Again, one was based on the whole piston undercrown surface area with the Nusselt number based on the nozzle diameter, and the other was based on the oil jet impingement area with the Nusselt number based on the oil jet effective impingement diameter. The correlations can predict the 95% and 94% of the experimental measurements within 30% error, respectively. The first correlation is simpler to use and can be employed for cases in which the oil jet wets the whole piston undercrown. The latter may be more useful for larger pistons or higher Prandtl number conditions in which the oil jet wets only a portion of the undercrown.
