This document represents a culmination of my MFA in Dance: Design and Production studies. Within this paper, I explore how the use of color in lighting design strengthens kinesthetic empathy- the connection audience members make between themselves and the performance. Kinesthetic empathy is a concept that has been largely studied from the perspective of phenomenology, the field from which it is derived. Lighting Designers create an atmosphere with lighting in which the dancer performs, and through the combination of the dancer's movement and the lighting, the audience experiences kinesthetic empathy. An individual's perception of a color used in a performance is determined by personal, situational, and cultural factors. An examination of three designs from the Process Dance Festival elucidates the practical application of color in dance lighting.
