One type of online content that has increased in popularity is video footage obtained by bystanders, or "crowd-sourced" videos. This study examined the personal and political function of crowd-sourced footage through the concept of bearing witness. Viewers who bear witness to crowd-sourced footage not only feel empathy toward the victim or victims, but also feel a sense of participation or engagement in the act itself by viewing the event as a witness. Question 1 of this study examined whether the viewers' ability to bear witness depends on the characteristics of the victim (i.e., male, female, or multiple victims). Question 2 of this study attempted to answer how the characteristics of the victim may impact bearing witness as defined by the two constructs of empathy and moral responsibility. Results showed that viewers experienced increased sympathy and concern ( empathic concern) after viewing the video footage regardless of the type of video watched. In addition, subjects who viewed the multiple victims video experienced the most distress and unease (personal distress ). Regarding moral position, victim characteristics had no significant impact on idealism or relativism scores. The highest percentage of subjects were absolutists and exceptionists in both the pre-test and the post-test measures. Recommendations for future studies include the impact of victim and subject race on levels of empathy and moral position, the role of gender in bearing witness , and the impact of bearing witness on jury decision-making.
