This study's purpose was to explore and describe registered nurses' preconceptions and expectations of their day-to-day clinical work prior to their entry into the profession. Registered nurses often deal with a negative---even hostile---work environment, which arises from several factors, including workplace violence, incivility, and bullying. Such an environment causes burnout, lowers job satisfaction levels, and increases turnover rates. Through an exploratory approach, face-to-face interviews were conducted to collect data to determine whether there were disconnections between nurses' expectations and the realities of their practice, and whether the presence of a disconnection influenced their job satisfaction. The data were analyzed using micro-thematic reflection with line-by-line coding, which allowed themes to be categorized and meanings derived. The participants consisted of 10 registered nurses from the state of Minnesota, who were recruited through convenience and snowball sampling. The findings indicated that expectations and realities differed markedly. Six main themes and multiple sub-themes emerged, and certain aspects of the realities faced by the registered nurses negatively affected their level job satisfaction.
