This study examined the psychometric characteristics of three measures of leader-member exchange (LMX). Item response theory methods were used to inform comparisons among the measures. Specifically, test information curves, item parameters, and tests of differential item functioning were conducted for each LMX scale. Classical test theory statistics were also computed. Participants completed the three LMX measures of interest along with measures of theoretically relevant constructs. The results show that all three scales generally have strong psychometric qualities. However, the Leader-member Social Exchange scale tends to be the strongest of the three, and it is recommended that future research and practice use this measure. Areas where LMX measurement can be improved are identified and subsequent recommendations are given for item development. Implications for both future research and practice involving LMX are discussed.
