This phenomenological study investigated the lived experience of individuals who received Reiki along four domains of experiences: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. The study looked to determine if, regardless of presenting concern, psychological themes---within the mental and emotional domains---were commonly experienced by the participants during Reiki treatment. Ten female participants between the ages of 39 and 69 with varying levels of familiarity with Reiki were included in this study. The participants first received a one hour Reiki treatment from Reiki master Linda Herrick. Directly after the Reiki session, data was collected from the participants in the form of semistructured interviews and embodied writings. These protocols were reviewed to determine the participants' physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual experiences. The data was analyzed into textural and structural themes, which were then combined to form the composite description of the experience of receiving Reiki. The results showed that there were common themes within the mental and emotional domains, regardless of the reason for seeking Reiki. These lived experiences will be beneficial for mental healthcare professionals looking to incorporate Reiki into their treatments by allowing for more informed decisions regarding an integrated treatment plan and allowing them to better identify and empathize with the experiences of their clients. Additionally, it will provide information on common experiences to individuals looking for alternative and/or complementary forms of care for their psychological well-being. The results of this study may also be utilized to inform future research on Reiki and its potential use with psychological conditions. Furthermore, the experiences of individuals receiving Reiki could provide guidance to Reiki and other complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) practitioners, as well as the broader CAM and biofield communities.
