The aim of this doctoral project was to critically evaluate the literature on the impact of institutionalization on spousal caregivers of individuals diagnosed with dementia. The search engine EBSCO Host, Cochrane Reviews, and Google Scholar were utilized to find articles for the critique. Articles were included for review if they were published in English, were from countries with similar marital culture to the United States, and focused on spousal caregivers of individuals diagnosed with dementia before or after institutionalization. Eleven studies met the inclusion criteria and were critically examined. The reviewed literature resulted in both negative and positive impacts of spousal caregiving and provided contradictory results. Based on the articles examined, it is difficult to determine the exact impact of institutionalization on spousal caregivers of individuals with dementia due to limitations in methodology and limitations in generalizability to the population of spousal caregivers. Limitations, clinical implications, and recommendations for future research were discussed.
