Middle Tennessee State University has created the Tennessee Center for Botanical Medicine Research by partnering with the Guangxi Medicinal Botanical Garden in Nanning, China and receives exclusive plant extracts used in that region for medicinal treatment. The Chinese, along with various other ancient cultures, have been using plants medicinally to treat everything from bacterial infections to terminal cancers for thousands of years. Until recently, modern approaches have not been used to understand the effectiveness and process by which traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) works. Along with the TCM extracts, aurones were utilized as well, a naturally occurring type of flavonoid in plants such as snapdragons and dahlias that lend the flowers a yellow pigment. Due to the antifungal activities of a group of related biosynthetic precursor compounds, flavonoids, it is reasonable to believe that aurones may also possess antifungal activity. Our organism of focus is Candida albicans, a polyphenic fungus that is known to cause opportunistic infections of the oral cavity and genitalia in humans in a variety of diseases under the collective term candidiasis, where this particular species is the most prevalent cause. We have used standardized screening methods to test the extracts and aurones against C. albicans where it was revealed that a great many of them exhibited antifungal activity with over 80% inhibition of growth. It was also discovered that a few of these extracts and compounds degrade C. albicans biofilm and prevent new growth. It is imperative to discover and develop new treatments for fungal infections due to the deleterious effects that current treatments such as amphotericin B have on the body and growing resistance to antifungals. The goal of this research was to find an alternative to the drugs currently used and understand how these alternatives work to eliminate infection. We have identified several compounds that can be used as alternative treatments and a probable target of one of the aurones in the threonine biosynthetic pathway.
