Despite hard-hitting anti-smoking legislation and extensive public awareness of negative health consequences, including cardiovascular diseases and lung cancer, smoking continues to be one of the chief public health concerns in the world. Although people, organizations, and institutions have contributed to the decrease of cancer-related illness and death by smoking cessation campaigns thus far, six million deaths still occur annually worldwide, including 480,000 deaths in the United States (Brand, 2015; Balogh, Patlak & Nass, 2012; Scott- Sheldon et al., 2016). Approximately 200,000 of these 480,000 annual deaths that are caused by smoking-related illnesses occur within the population of those diagnosed with a mental illness (Brand, 2015; Balogh, Patlak & Nass, 2012; Scott- Sheldon et al., 2016). Of the 42 million people who struggle with tobacco dependence, 90% unsuccessfully attempt to quit annually. Without assistance by health-care providers, only 3% to 5% of smokers successfully quit. Smokers who are assisted by healthcare providers are 1.7 to 2.2 times more likely to remain a nonsmoker after 5 months (Regents of the University of California, 2011; Sheffer, Barone, & Anders, 2011). A pre- and post-questionnaire measured the self-reported 2-week point prevalence of smoking cessation at 4- weeks and 8- weeks follow-up. Twenty seven participants received the intervention of text messaging support from SmokefreeTXT and an education session. There was a statistical significant increase in smoking cessation after the intervention compared to before the intervention at eight weeks follow up, t (26)= 4.23, p < 0.000. This result support existing knowledge that text messaging support is effective in increasing smoking cessation as well as healthcare assistance.
