The current study examined the contributions between childhood attachment trauma, postnatal depression, and maternal self-efficacy to caregiving helplessness in order to better understand the etiology of maternal caregiving helplessness. One hundred and forty-five mothers with children ages 1 month to 3 years old completed an online self-report survey that assessed for caregiving helplessness, childhood attachment trauma, postnatal depression, and maternal self-efficacy. Caregiving helplessness was assessed using the Caregiving Helplessness Questionnaire (George & Solomon, 2011), childhood attachment trauma was assessed using the Attachment Trauma Life Events Questionnaire: Very Short Form (Keeling & George, 2015), postnatal depression was evaluated using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (Cox et al., 1987), and maternal self-efficacy was analyzed using Maternal Self-Efficacy Scale (Teti & Gelfand, 1991). Results showed that caregiving helplessness is directly related to childhood attachment trauma and maternal self-efficacy, but not postnatal depression. The study's limitations, future research, and implications for the field of Infant Mental health are discussed.
