The use of opioids to treat chronic pain is an increasing public health concern. The over-prescription of opioids is leading to severe substance use disorders and even death. Those who are already battling a substance use disorder are at an even higher risk of experiencing adverse consequences if they use opioids to treat their chronic pain.

The following systematic literature review explores alternative therapies that can be used to treat chronic pain instead of opioid prescription drugs. The systematic literature review will describe and summarize existing research about the use of mindfulness, yoga, and biofeedback to manage chronic pain. The final result of this special project is a flyer that will be shared with people with substance use disorders, and mental health professionals who work with this population, to inform them that they have other options when it comes to managing chronic pain.
