The purpose of this study was to determine the relationships between attachment style, texting dependence, age, and gender on relationship satisfaction in adults in romantic relationships. Previous research has found that adults communicate with their romantic partners in ways that are influenced by their adult attachment styles; therefore, examining the texting behavior of adults in romantic relationships may give insight into communication patterns and overall relationship satisfaction. In order to examine this issue, a quantitative research design utilized a web-based survey examining individuals' perceptions of their text dependence, relationship satisfaction, and attachment-related behaviors. Participants consisted of 95 adults in romantic relationships who own a cell phone with texting capabilities. The data was analyzed using Pearson's product-moment correlation, a multiple linear regression model, and two independent sample t-tests. The results indicated that those who experienced greater attachment anxiety relied on texting more and reported lower relationship satisfaction. Those who had higher levels of attachment avoidance reported lower relationship satisfaction. Text dependence did not contribute to any unique variability in levels of relationship satisfaction. Many of the demographics (i.e., age, gender, length of relationship, and distance between partners) were explored in a multiple regression; however, none accounted for a unique variance in levels of relationship satisfaction. Attachment avoidance was found to be the best predictor of relationship satisfaction whereas attachment anxiety was found to be the second best predictor. Men and women did not differ on levels of text dependence and levels of relationship satisfaction. Younger individuals were more dependent on texting than older individuals. Limitations to this study included the limited generalizability of the results, the uneven sample size, and the lack of sequential nature of the relationship between the variables. This research supports the notion that early experiences set the foundation for later social functioning, therefore the opportunity for social interaction remains a necessary feature for children and adolescents to develop their social and relational skills. Future research can examine these variables across specific demographics, including ethnicity, age, and sexual orientation. It may be useful to use texting as a form of intervention in couple's therapy.
