The topic of this study was to examine the relationship between the type of ownership of nursing homes and their quality of care deficiencies, the citations for abuse, and the residents' rights deficiencies. Therefore, given the differences in ownership status, the research problem to be addressed is what difference, if any, is there between profit and non-profit nursing homes in adherence to the Medicare and/or Medicaid regulations? The purpose of this quantitative longitudinal study was to compare not-for-profit and for profit nursing homes abuse deficiency citations, quality of care deficiencies, and residents' rights deficiencies to determine if the Medicaid and/or Medicare regulations should improve in order, to explore potential deficiencies in care. The study participants included profit and non-profit nursing homes in Ohio. The Kruskal-Wallis H test did not show statistically significant differences between the type of ownership status and the abuse citations, quality of care citations, or the resident rights citations. The (H (2) = .332, p = 0.565), with a mean rank ownership score of 44.50 for non-profit and 46.50 for for-profit of the abuse level of harm. The (H (2) = 1.378, p = 0.241), with a mean rank ownership score of 47.70 for non-profit and 43.30 for for-profit of the quality of care level of harm. The (H (2) = 1.780, p = 0.182), with a mean rank ownership score of 43.50 for non-profit and 47.50 for for-profit of the resident rights level of harm. There are differences between the care received in the nursing homes however, it cannot be concluded that the ownership type is a factor. Recommendations for future research are that a longitudinal observational study be conducted to allow the differences witnessed first-hand. Another, recommendation is that the geographic location is expanded while including more deficiency citation variables.
