This study explores two topics that are fused in a very important way: high school career and technical education (CTE) and the construction industry. The direct impact that high school education in the United States has on the construction industry is significant to both the economy and educational system. An academic vocational divide caused by public perceptions of the industry and lack of knowledge about the many career pathways available has led the construction industry to face what is termed a skills gap. This skills gap is defined by the many high school students who pursue college or university directly after high school, but who later find themselves unemployed or underemployed without the skills that could lead them to the many careers available in construction. This mixed methods study concentrates on CTE construction students who participate in surveys and interviews as a chance to illuminate their decisions to pursue CTE in construction.
