The purpose of this study was to research the root causes of data center outages, which created loss in availability within the data center industry, and to identify solutions for reducing downtime. This study also considered the impact of efficiency in data centers achieving data center uptime. This research reviewed tier classification standards and federal reports to identify themes contributing to data center disruptions in the form of outages affecting availability.

This research found that the efforts, by both the private and public sectors, aimed to control the exponential growth in data center energy consumption yielded second and third degree effects disrupting the network availability of services. While critical and necessary, redundancy alone will not prevent outages. Both sectors consolidated data centers to regulate energy expenditure, which inadvertently created environments of high server densities. Data center consolidation reduced physical space, which altered the efficacy of airflow management. Under developed disaster recovery plans, and poor visibility into data center operations, promoted reacting to outages rather than a culture of proactive defenses.

This research recommended calculating the appropriate level of redundancy so as not to adversely affect operations. Data center industry leaders should incorporate modular data centers to maximize on efficiency and energy consumption savings. However, companies should empower their operators with data center monitoring tools to reduce human error. Outages will continue to occur; therefore, achieving a mindset geared towards reducing downtime instead of prevention altogether, can be accomplished through disaster recovery preparedness.
