This scholarly project was a non-experimental, pre/post-test design to (a) facilitate the voluntary adoption of the National Early Warning Score (NEWS), and (b) develop clinical decision making (CDM) in one cohort of junior level nursing students participating in a simulation lab. NEWS is an evidence-based predictive scoring tool developed by the Royal College of Physicians (2012). The interventions were instructional strategies developed from Tanner's Clinical Judgment model (Tanner, 2006), the framework for the project. The instrument for evaluating CDM was the Lasater Clinical Judgment Rubric (LCJR) (Lasater, 2007). LCJR scores were analyzed using a paired t-test. There was no voluntary use of NEWS during simulation, neither was a statistically significant difference found in LCJR scores pre- and post-activities. Although students demonstrated an understanding of the content and value of NEWS, they were not able to translate this into simulated practice.
