The aim of this mixed-methods study is to study the current users of social media and the interrelatedness of deception as well as a Machiavellian personality, self-esteem, and social desirability. Social media sites have become a large part of daily life for many individuals and allow for the immediate connection to others. This study was limited to users of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat as they are the most widely used social media sites today. Deception is an active process defined by Buller and Burgoon (1996) in their Interpersonal Deception Theory (IDT) as an interpersonal process involving a sent message with the intent of prompting a false belief or conclusion. IDT proposes that there are three categories of motivation for deception including: instrumental (to benefit the self), relational (to manage relationships), and identity (to protect the self). This study found that individuals are deceptive for all three goals described by Buller and Burgoon in a proportionate amount. Additionally, past research has suggested that individuals with a low self-esteem, high propensity for Machiavellian personality, and high social desirability may be more likely to participate in deception on social media than other individuals. Though not significant, the study found that individuals with lower self-esteem, higher likelihood of Machiavellian personality, and lower social desirability needs may be more likely to engage in deceptive behavior on social media than those who are not deceptive.
