Internet of Things is based on the concept of connecting "Things" with each other. Things can be any inanimate objects like keys, bike, TV, car, sensors connected to humans or other devices to collect data from it and make smart decisions. This is how IoT is going to make smart cities, smart homes etc. To make this happen a lot of research have been carried out. A variety of technologies have been designed to suffice the requirements. In Telecom Industry, 3GPP, an organization which sets standards for Cellular Communication, is also involved in IoT. In Release 12, total of seven technologies were proposed to meet the requirements of IoT devices. The proposed technology can be categorized into two types, GSM based & Clean slate solutions. GSM based technology concentrate on existing GSM whereas clean slate proposal give a complete new approach to meet IoT requirements.

Recent developments in Cellular technology was to increase the data rate and provide high speed connectivity. LTE has been the most successful in meeting this high speed connectivity demand which provides a data rate of 300Mbs for downlink & 75Mbps for uplink. Whereas the requirements of IoT devices are low data rate, enhanced coverage (since devices can be in inaccessible areas), and long battery life. Narrow-band OFDMA is one of the standard under clean slate proposals and looks promising since it uses OFDMA technology for downlink and SC-OFDMA for uplink.

In this thesis, we will be simulating our proposed design which completes the Initial synchronization procedure of IoT device. The procedure involves IoT devices to detect the strongest cell within its vicinity, achieve time, frequency & frame synchronization. NB-OFDMA transmits Kasami sequence as primary synchronization signal and Zad-Off Chu sequences as secondary synchronization. Once the device completes the initial synchronization procedure it will have Cell ID and achieve time, frequency & frame synchronization, and will be ready to receive other control channels from the cell.
