Thesis (Ph.D.)

This thesis develops a model in which the subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) is a key source component for basaltic igneous rocks in arc settings. The standard model of mantle melting, described in Chapter 1, is reasonably effective in predicting the compositions of some basaltic rocks. In many settings, however, the observed geochemistry of alkalic basalts requires the presence of a source component that is chemically distinct from the depleted mantle. This thesis shows that the in situ metasomatized SCLM provides a simple explanation for certain geochemical signatures observed in arc magmas that are otherwise difficult to interpret in the standard model of arc melting.

Chapter 2 applies this framework to the interpretation of the geochemistry of several volcanoes in the central Mediterranean. A key part of the argument is that the same source component is observed in volcanic rocks of both Pantelleria and Etna, on the incoming plate, as well as of Ustica, which is within the arc. This is a natural consequence of a setting in which the incoming plate and the supraslab plate are both composed of continental lithosphere with a similar formation history.

Chapter 3 extends the framework to establish a connection between the geochemistry of alkalic basalts throughout Europe and North Africa and the age of the lithosphere at a regional scale. The model predicts that the age of the lithospheric mantle determines the isotopic ratios that are actually observed in the alkalic basalts. Chapter 4 applies this framework to resolve a debate about the origin of an igneous province in the forearc of the Cascadian subduction zone.
