My primary research question is: "How did presidential rhetoric change after 9/11?" I chose this question to help explain in part the reaction to the attacks on the United States and how the President used rhetoric to shape U.S. foreign policy. My thesis is that there was a change in the use of the rhetorical device of rhetoric by President George W. Bush following the attacks of September 11, 2001.

520 $a I hypothesize that the rhetoric of the G.W. Bush administration changed following 9/11. According to Schlesinger and Lau (2000, 612) "it has long been recognized that much of the power of metaphors involves the emotional responses that they can induce in a variety of political or social contexts." Following the attacks of September 11, 2001, I suggest there was an increase in the quantity and quality of the metaphors used to describe the new-found enemy. President Bush tried to create an image of the enemy as subhuman, a parasite, evil, and to use Robert Ivie's words, a "savage." This is important because it got us into a war with a country that had nothing to do with the 9/11 attacks.
520 $a My primary research question is: "Did presidential rhetoric change after 9/11? Sub questions will look at the six final clusters that I used for the final stage of the research project and for the statistical analysis. They included: 1) Did the use of the code "American exceptionalism" change from pre-to post 9/11? 2) Did the use of the code "Evil" change from pre-to post 9/11? iii 3) Did the use of the code "Security" change from pre-to post 9/11? 4) Did the use of the code "Terror" change from pre-to post 9/11? 5) Did the use of the code "Values" change from pre-to post 9/11? 6) Did the use of the code "WMD" change from pre-to post 9/11?
520 $a Corollary questions to be considered include: 1) Did the attacks of 9/11 transform the rhetoric of the President? 2) How do the President and his surrogates shape the public's agenda through the media using speeches, interviews, and other persuasive texts? 3) Was his use of rhetoric, whatever his goals, successful? These questions will be explored further in the final chapter.
520 $a I proceeded to analyze thirty-nine of President Bush's speeches given in his first term from January 20, 2001 to January 20, 2005 using Robert L. Ivie's five step method. I think these questions are important to provide a look at how Bush changed his use of rhetoric in September of 2002 when his speeches began to focus on Iraq and Saddam Hussein.
520 $a The purpose of this study then, was to examine the change of rhetoric by looking at the frequency of certain key terms or vehicles, and metaphors used by the President before and after 9/11. I hope to find about the effect on public opinion if any, of presidential rhetoric. Did then use of the words that denote savagery make the public more accepting of invasion of Iraq.
