Organizations in recent years have found a renewed interest in CSR activities. CSR research has resulted in mixed evidence when examining the relationship between CSR activities and revenue with more recent research pointing to a positive relationship (Orlitzsky, et al., 2003). This study adds to the literature by examining the role of commitment to CSR in both private and public firms. Theories such as legitimacy and decoupling are used to explain the differences between actions of public and private firms. While the hypotheses are largely unsupported, the research is expanded by looking at both public and private firms, utilizing the overall CSR scores as well as the sub-score of environmental CSR while offering future direction as scholars continue to explore the constructs surrounding the CSR relationships in an effort to better enact profitable strategies.
