Many organizations operate in a global environment where employee's work on crossfunctional teams challenged with developing solutions to complex business problems. The leaders of work teams are faced with managing diverse workers of different cultural backgrounds, scheduling tasks under different time zones, and communicating without the ability to socialize in a face-to-face setting. Leaders are confronted with the task of how to communicate, motivate, and manage workers under these unique and often adverse conditions toward the common goal of organizational success. The purpose of this qualitative, modified Delphi study was to ascertain from a group of 25 expert panelists, through the use of open-ended research questions, the leadership competencies necessary to manage cross-functional, culturally diverse teams in telecommunications organizations. The participant responses were interpreted through text analysis and coding for themes and patterns in the data. Third Party Software such as Survey Monkey, Microsoft Excel and Access were used to carefully analyze and interpret the qualitative data. The findings are leaders would be successful if they displayed the following competencies: a) effective, open, honest communication, b) previous knowledge of job function, c) organizational and project planning skills, d) empathy/caring for team members, e) good listening skills, f) a focus on motivating the team, g) time-management skills, h) goal oriented, and i) a passion that was infectious and the ability to convey that passion to other team members. The recommendation from the expert panelists for key stakeholders of telecommunication and other U.S. Fortune 500 organizations, which manage global cross-functional teams, was to ensure that team leaders would be more successful if they comply with the aforementioned recommendations.
