This dissertation examined the impact that the introduction of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy had upon a Residential Treatment Center, The Manor Foundation. The Manor Foundation is a Residential Treatment Center for mentally and emotionally impaired youth ages 7 through 18 located in Jonesville, Michigan. Solution-Focused Brief Therapy is a strength based treatment model that focuses on aiding clients in recognizing solutions to their presenting problems in their own existing skills and resources. The Solution-Focused Brief Therapy model was introduced through a series of in-service staff trainings. A simple pretest-posttest design was utilized to evaluate the impact the introduction of the treatment approach had upon the success of residents. The results of the study found a statistically significant increase in the adaptive behavior of the residents participating in the study (N = 39) as well as a statistically significant decrease in maladaptive behaviors. These findings suggest that Solution-Focused Brief Therapy can be an effective treatment approach in Residential Treatment Centers.
