Within the field of behavioral health, there is growing recognition of the need to define, teach, and assess essential competencies for the providers who deliver mental health services (Hoge, Tondora, & Marrelli, 2004). In January 2003, the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT) formed the AAMFT Core Competency Taskforce whose goal was to develop a list of core competencies in order to define the domains of knowledge and the requisite skills in each domain that comprise the practice of marriage and family therapy (Northey, 2005). The result is a published list of 128 competencies which represent the minimum that MFTs licensed to practice independently must possess. These competencies are expected to make a significant impact on how MFT education and training is organized and delivered.

Currently, training programs are trying to define how trainees can best acquire the core competencies. Many general approaches are under discussion, with no specific models yet adopted. The purpose of this study is to contribute to the training and supervision literature in the field, and to provide educators and trainers with a tool to be used in the training of beginning marriage and family therapy students in the core competencies. The current study is a program development using the SFBT "consultation break" technique as a training method for beginning MFT students. In addition to program development, the present dissertation also includes recommendations for program evaluation.

The study concludes with a description of the training package as it will appear in its final stage when ready for distribution. An explanation of the components included in the training package and plans to design the package are presented. Also included in this discussion is an account of for whom the program is intended, as well as the way the program will be marketed to the target audience.
