Adolescents face a myriad of risk factors that pose threats to their mental health. In the past, prevention programming for youth has focused on the prevention of particular mental disorders and symptoms. Recent research has shown that there are common underlying risk factors that contribute to the development of mental disorders. For this reason, the most beneficial and effective type of prevention programming focuses on alleviating underlying risk factors, while also enhancing protective factors. This type of programming is both time and cost effective, as youth presenting with a myriad of emotional and behavioral problems can participate in the same groups. This program development dissertation describes a school-based program for at-risk (identified as 'selected') 7th and 8th graders. The program focuses on enhancing the ten wellness dimensions of the Child and Adolescent Wellness Scale (CAWS) through the implementation of activities based in narrative and solution-focused techniques. The purpose of the program is the prevention of mental illness as well as the enhancement of mental health and well-being in adolescents.
