Persons with mental retardation are at risk for the development of psychopathology and as deinstitutionalization brings more clients with coexisting symptoms of mental illness and mental retardation into the mainstream of society mental health professionals have become reinvolved in the treatment of this population. A number of serious dilemmas accompany their reinvolvement, however, one of which is that few mental health personnel are knowledgeable and experienced in working with persons who are retarded and even fewer are experienced with the condition in conjunction with mental illness. In addition, community mental health systems have developed separately from and parallel to MR/DD systems, leaving dually-diagnosed clients to fall through a gap in the service delivery system.

Given the premise that both mental health and mental retardation professionals are responsible for mental health services to this population, an exploratory study was conducted to compare each group's knowledge of the other's specialty and, more importantly, mental illness as it relates to persons with mental retardation. A survey instrument consisting of 55 objective, multiple-choice questions was completed by 121 practitioners employed in a county mental health system and 103 from a MR/DD system for an overall return rate of 78.6%. Intervening variables consisted of practitioners' experience, training and education. In addition, an assessment was conducted of each professional's personal confidence in providing various mental health services for clients with mental retardation.

T-tests revealed that mental health professionals knew significantly more about mental illness, while MR/DD professionals knew significantly more about mental illness as it relates to persons with mental retardation. A series of 9 regression analyses revealed that mental health professionals who had reportedly taken academic coursework or other training in mental retardation scored significantly higher on the knowledge inventory, while MR/DD professionals who had reportedly conducted greater amounts of reading on the subject of dual diagnosis received significantly higher scores. Overall, the primary independent variable, field of practice, (i.e., mental health or mental retardation) accounted for the greatest amount of variance in scores. Results were discussed in terms of evaluation and training programs for professionals in both mental health and mental retardation.
