This study investigated how a questioning technique called the "miracle question" works--does this question create a shift in people's perspective about their problems? How is it experienced by them? The miracle question, adapted from Milton Erickson's work by Steven de Shazer, asks clients to imagine their life in the future after a miracle has occurred and their problem has been solved. This study investigated the types of responses generated by the miracle question as well as people's experience of the question. The effects of other future-oriented questions is reviewed and compared to the effects of the miracle question. To provide a context, solution-focused theory is reviewed as well as the work of Milton Erickson.

A qualitative design was utilized consisting of twelve one-hour interviews. Participants were seven clients at a community mental health center who were enrolled in a parent educational group, a women's support group or a birthmother's support group. The remaining five participants were all mothers recruited by a personal contact. There were 11 female participants and 1 male participant, ranging in age from 22 to 41 and representing various ethnic origins. Participants were asked to respond to the miracle question and describe their experience of it. Responses were analyzed and grouped into categories and themes.

In their imagined miracles, participants described having better housing situations and better relationships with loved ones and thought they would feel more confident, happier, and freer. Participants also experienced changes in hope, mood, agency and their perspective on the problem. The range of hope experiences emerged as one of the most interesting findings. It was also notable that some participants imagined both an idealized and realistic version of their miracle while others stated they had no belief in miracles. It was suggested that the miracle question highlights people's relationship to hope and that this relationship may be utilized in psychotherapy. Finally, a "both/and" approach in therapy was outlined as a way to work with the affective tensions brought up by this question.
