Men who have been imprisoned in Michigan are required to attend individual therapy, as a condition of their parole or probation, after they have been released. The purpose of this research was two-fold. The first was to investigate and treat the most common and difficult relationship problems fathers often deal with as they attempt to reintegrate back into their families. The second was to challenge the efficacy of mandated individual therapy as an appropriate counseling strategy for helping fathers and their families recover from their hardships and losses.

To accomplish those goals, two groups of ten fathers were recruited from a residential halfway house in Lansing, Michigan to participate in a quasi-experimental study. The comparison group received individual therapy without their wives over a 2-month period, and the experimental group of fathers received family therapy with their wives over a 2-month period. Both groups were pre- and post-tested with the FACES II Instrument, which measures familial perceptions of Adaptability and Cohesion. Moreover, a Contextual, Solution-focused Model was created and implemented for the experimental group to help reconcile marital problems, and restore rules, roles, and boundaries. Pre-test perceptions of adaptability and cohesion between both groups were the same. However, one-sample and two-sample T-tests reflected post-test differences between the two groups, at .05 levels of statistical significance. Experimental group fathers reported improvements over the comparison group in both domains.
