Training for Child Protective Services (CPS) investigators typically focuses on interviewing and investigative skills. These skills principally aid in the accomplishment of the tasks of investigation rather than intervention, or assisting the families in question. In recent years, several approaches to interventions with families and children have been developed for ongoing workers, however are not applicable or adaptable to CPS work. Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT) techniques hold promise for CPS work due to their succinct, focused, and flexible nature. SFT has produced positive, immediate, and enduring changes with families, even when all members are not participating. However, these results were obtained from voluntary clients working with trained therapists, whereas CPS workers deal with involuntary clients and rarely have adequate preparation to assist with the issues they face.

CPS workers in two comparable New York counties were trained in six SFT techniques, and subsequently implemented them in their work. This study sought to examine workers' and clients' experiences with these techniques to gain a preliminary sense of the appropriateness of and parameters for the use of SFT techniques in CPS work. A mix of mixed methods were used in a case study design to learn about how and where SFT techniques could and could not be used in CPS work. Positive findings indicate SFT techniques are adaptable and applicable to CPS work. They provide a unique and productive contribution, which includes changes in the dynamics of the worker-family relationship. Recommendations for continued implementation and further research are offered.
